Kyon is a student who used to believe in Santa Claus, aliens, gods, demons, ESPers, and all the other good stuff under this sun. Unfortunately, graduating from middle school made him realize that none of these really exist. His world turned more mature, but it also turned rather gray and boring. Right now he is on his way to class on his first day in highschool.

After Kyon did his own rather off-the-shelf introduction to the class, the person behind him gets up and introduces herself. She says: "My name is Haruhi Suzumiya. I have no interest in regular humans. If there are any aliens, time travelers, sliders, or ESPers here, come join me. That's all!" Kyon doesn't realize it yet, but with a few short sentences, the person who just spoke brought color back into his life. Mostly, people don't know what to think though. Kyon's voice, who provides the overall background commentary, sounds confused, even though he is reporting back from the future, telling us the story of his school days with Haruhi.

Kyon's first attempt at talking to Haruhi is met with contempt and ends quickly; she really isn't into regular humans. As we learn soon from a student who attended the same middle school as Haruhi, she is serious about what she said. At her former school, she repeatedly got into trouble because of her outrageous actions in trying to establish contact with aliens.

During physical education, the guys are watching the girls. Most are interested in Asakura, a beautiful girl, who also happens to be good at sports and the class president. Then comes Haruhi, who performs the 100m run in an incredible time. It also becomes apparent that she isn't really well connected socially. We hear a couple of stories as to Haruhi's boyfriends. Those did in fact exist, but usually not for long. It is because Haruhi considered them to be intellectually equivalent to potatoes, which is why in the end she gave up on human boyfriends alltogether.

Haruhi has a wide ranging set of peculiarities. For example, she changes her hairstyle ever day in accordance with the current weekday.

Also, Haruhi is socially uninhibited. When it is time to change clothing for sports, she doesn't wait until the guys have left the classroom. The poor guys literaly have to flee the room.

One early morning before the first class, Kyon comments on Haruhi's hair. He deduces what day of the week it is by looking at her hair style. It ensues a discussion of hair-style encoded weekdays, colors that match weekdays (yay!), and whether to starting counting the week at zero or not and whether zero is Sunday or Monday.

In contrast to most who came before him, Kyon is getting through to Haruhi, and she shares some of her convictions with him. Specifically, it is about boyfriends, and she tells him that she really is looking for an alien boyfriend, boy or girl, because they are more fun than ordinary humans. That's logic 101 for you!

Kyon's conversation with Haruhi, even though it ended with the usual urusai, didn't go unnoticed. Ikutski and Asakura walk up to Kyon and congratulate him. Within moments, he is made the official contact person to talk with Haruhi, since most people are plain confused or afraid about her. Asakura is particularly happy because she believes that Haruhi has finally found a friend and has stopped isolating herself from the class.

Some time later, the students have to move seats, but Haruhi ends up behind Kyon again. In a longer conversation, Kyon explains to Haruhi that aliens don't exist, only to upset her further. Yet another short time later, during class, Haruhi suddenly gets excited. Rather than trying to join random clubs at the school, she decides to found her own club. She'll be the club leader, of course, and the second member, who would have thought that, will be Kyon.

Haruhi finds a clubroom quickly, basically squatting the place. The room comes with an inhabitant, the last member of the literary club, who used to own this room. The inhabitant is Yuki Nagato, and she is quickly made the third member of the club. A few minutes later, Haruhi is back with yet another new member, Mikuru, who Haruhi abducted from a second-year class. According to Haruhi, Mikuru comes with special powers that will do the club good. Specifically, she is cute, and Haruhi expects to put her moe power to good use. Mikuru is too shy to reject anything the rather uninhibited if not outright shameless Haruhi is doing to her or is suggesting they'll be doing in the future.

Kyon is floored. He just takes it in. The final hit is the club's name, which Haruhi determines to be SOS Brigade, which the fansub I'm watching translates with "save the world by overloading it with fun according to Haruhi Suzumiya." It is a good name, as it states the club's mission clearly: To do whatever Haruhi wants. Kyon can't believe what he is getting into.
